Presentation: Sensible Home Desig

by Special Guest Speaker: Deborah Todd

Deborah Todd is a designer of residential homes based in Bellingham, WA. Since the 1970s, she has been actively promoting small homes, renewable energy, and sustainability. While a resident at Findhorn, an intentional community in Northern Scotland, she developed insight into community development and natural design. As a member of the Whole Earth Catalog and Truck Store team, she was a pioneer in the appropriate technology/renewable energy movement.

Along with her husband, she ran a design/build company that specialized in passive solar homes under 1,200 square feet. With hands-on experience in design, construction, electrical, and cabinetry, she labored to understand all the dynamics at play in integral and sustainable design. Over the past twenty-plus years, her Bellingham firm, Building Design Services, has been responsible for the design of over 200 homes throughout North America. These homes are distinguished by their focus on sustainability, craftsmanship, and site-sensitive pleasing aesthetics. She is a LEED accredited professional and a certified Sustainable Building Advisor. She lives and works out of her home at the base of the Chuckanut Mountains, and has installed a grid tied solar- and microhydro-electric system.
