Earth Day Island Cleanup
Continuing the tradition of past Earth Day island cleanups, the Groundfloor Guemes group of the Community Center Association is organizing an Island Cleanup Day. Join with Guemes Island neighbors to clean our island shores and roadways on Saturday, April 22.
Help us plan the day by contacting us through the Community Center’s new website, myguemes.org – (“we’d love to hear from you” link). Please indicate the number of persons in your party. If you plan to clean up your own roadway or beach, please tell us where that is. While you’re at the website, don’t forget to join the new GICCA mailing list!
You can participate in this island-caring event in one of two ways.
1. Meet at the School House Park at the corner of Edens Road and Guemes Island Road at 1:00 p.m. Volunteers can then select from a list of designated beaches and roadways. Trash collection bags will be distributed. Long-handled tongs provided by Skagit Public Works can be signed out. It is suggested that you bring work gloves and water.
2. You may choose instead to clean your own beach or roadway. If you need trash bags or tongs, they will be available at the School House Park at 1:00 p.m.
Collected trash and the tongs must be returned to the park by 4:00 p.m. Truck support will be available, if needed, to assist in getting the filled trash bags back to the park. The trash will be picked up by Skagit Public Works.
Further information can be requested through myguemes.org or by contacting Holly Green at (360) 610-3829 or Edie Clark at (360) 299-3230.
Let’s work together during the day to keep our island beautiful. Then, in the evening our Earth Day spirit will continue in the first ever Guemes Island Earth Day Luminary Parade.
