Start of the two mile walk

The weather couldn't have been better for the 10th Annual Dog Island Run on Guemes Island. With temps in the mid-70's and cool ocean breezes, the runners and walkers were treated to one of those treasured cloudless days in the San Juan Islands.

The 10th Annual was a year of firsts! We set an attendance record with 215 participants (106 runners and 84 walkers) who showed for the event, not to mention the family members who were on hand for support. 31 US cities were represented including: Anacortes (63), Seattle (43), Mount Vernon (15), Bellingham (13), Burlington (1), and various others. 8 out of state participants: Idaho (2), Pennsylvania (2), Florida (1), Arizona (2), plus 1 international participant from British Columbia.

As starting time drew nearer, we all held our breath as many participants were still waiting to get on the ferry in Anacortes. Not missing a beat, the valiant crew of the ferry Guemes, ran extra runs to ensure that all the runners and walkers made it to the starting line on time! We owe a huge vote of thanks to our friends on the ferry who consistently go above and beyond, each and very year, to support the Dog Island Run and our island library.

Mike Giacobbe who last year came the furthest distance from Davis, Florida, returned this year with a future Dog Island runner.

We also want to thank the folks at Skagit Running Club for 10 years of technical assistance and man/woman power, as well as our friends at Chandler's Square Retirement Community, for 10 straight years of support, providing bus shuttle service to participants from the ferry landing to the park, all of our sponsors, and the Guemes Island Fire Department for their assistance doing traffic control, and providing aide in the event of medical emergency.

We want to thank all the members of the Guemes Island Library Board, island volunteers, friends, and family, and all the folks who were on hand to help. The Dog Island Run is truly a community gig, and one that not only supports island activities, but also brings us together, like a big family, year after year. Many of the participants this year commented that the Dog Island Run has become a favorite, simply because, unlike other events, ours has a kind of "friendly, community feel." But that's really just the way we do things on Guemes Island.

According to Carol Pellett, Library Board Director, the 10th Annual Dog Island Run grossed $4,800 dollars. After expenses of $2,000 dollars, the event netted a hefty $2,800 dollars for the Guemes Island Library! This was our best year ever.

Thank you one and all. See you next year for the 11th Annual Dog Island Run.
