Skagit County Commissioners Hearing

Yes, that date is correct. The afternoon was unseasonably warm and sunny. Many people had last minute shopping to complete, presents to wrap, holiday greetings to send, and baking to finish. Not to mention others who had to take time away from their jobs during this hectic pre-holiday work week. There were many cars waiting for the 11:00 AM crossing. Many people were out of their cars and using their “linetime” to greet neighbors and share thoughts, opinions, and information.

In spite of this, 39 Guemes Island residents attended the Skagit County Commissioners Hearing regarding the acceptance of the GITF proposal for fares and schedules. Of these 39 citizens in attendance, 9 requested to have their opinions heard. One citizen simply distributed copies of his written comments to the Commissioners. The ongoing debate is still an extended ferry schedule {after 6:00PM Monday through Thursday}. As many who have been following this divisive issue are aware, surveys have shown the islanders split at about 55% to 45% NOT to extend the hours. These reasons are too numerous to mention here. Of the nine citizens heard, only 4 were in favor of extending the hours at this time.

The Commissioners listened to arguments for extended hours, endorsements of the GITF recommendations and complaints about the inconvenience of the schedule as it stands. Lots to digest along with the numerous emails received on the same subject.

The Commissioners decided to deliberate this matter after the holidays and render a decision on January 19, 2004 at10:00AM in the Commissioners Hearing Room.

I don’t envy them!
