Peace in Action

Q: What are those Peace in Action folks doing, sitting by the red RV at the ferry dock all this next week?

A: They are hoping you will participate in helping Iraqi Refugees and in writing to Northwest service men and women. These are opportunities to participate in peaceful action this season:

Thanks and God Bless Our Troops

Join us in sending letters, cards and prayers to our troops in Iraq. Let’s tell them how much we appreciate the many sacrifices they are making for us here on Guemes Island.

We have paper and cards for you to write and sign at our PEACE IN ACTION booth. Leave your letters in the box at the table and we will see that they are delivered to a gathering site in Anacortes for bulk mailing. The letters you send will be going to service men and women from Northwest Washington – they are our representatives in Iraq. Let them know we are proud of them.

Helping Iraqi Refugees

Help provide services to over 4 million Iraqi Refugees who have been displaced within Iraq or are living in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. It is time to ACT NOW to relieve the conditions under which refugees are living in remote camps without electricity, sanitation and clean water. Medical services and educational opportunities are often nonexistent. Refugees living in neighboring countries are not allowed to work and live under constant fear of deportation. Those refugees that do return to Iraq have no homes or means for supporting themselves and their personal safety is constantly in danger.

Your contributions can help. For instance:

$40 can feed a family of 4 for 2 weeks

$85 provides warm coats and hats for 5 children

$100 can help provide medicines and testing for chronically ill refugees

$300 supplies 3000 patients with clean water at Abu Al-Khasib district hospital

$1000 can provide 2 months of vocational training and psychological counseling for 75 children.

Donations will be forwarded through Church World Service which operates through the International Council of Churches. They have been operating refugee centers around the world for 60 years and are recognized as one of the most reputable non governmental organizations.

Their track record for utilizing the funds efficiently with minimal overhead is outstanding. Your donation is tax deductible. Make your check out to Guemes Church - for Iraqi Refugees.

Thank You
