Community Council Meeting Minutes

Community Center Mission

The purpose of the Guemes Island Community Center Association is to promote the educational, recreational, and social welfare of Guemes Island. In conjunction with this purpose, the Association shall maintain and operate a meeting hall and associated facilities and properties, hereafter called the Community Center. These shall be for the use of all members in a scheduled manner. For-profit organizations, certain private affairs, and off-island organizations may be allowed use of the Community Center at the discretion of the Board of Trustees. While the Association may offer financial or logistical support to various Guemes Island organizations or individuals, in order for the Association to appeal to and gain the broadest support from the membership, it shall not directly sponsor other organizations.

Hall Items Seeking New Home

A lively clean-up crew went through the Hall kitchen, attic, and 'backstage' areas during the community work party last Saturday, April 5, and many items were deemed "ready to retire" and put aside to be given away.

There are tablecloths, utensils, and other overflow items from the kitchen, as well as books, games, and containers that have been stashed in the Hall for ages.

Here's a last chance to find something you may have left at a long-ago potluck, or acquire something new before it goes to the thrift store in town.

You can take a look (and take something away) at the Hall for the next two weeks. The Hall will be open on Friday evenings during Game Night (6:30 to 8:30) and you can also get in whenever the Library is open, through Monday, April 21st.

Guemes Island Community Council Members for 2008 are the incumbents: Connie Snell and Anne Jackets Co-Presidents; Susan Wintermantel, Secretary; and Carol Pellett, Treasurer.

Gary Curtis and Carl Cady were re-elected through 2009 with new trustees Dianne Murray, Charmaine Johannes, and Jerry Frelix joining them for their two year terms.

Classy Dress Sale and Tea

Thanks to Becky Rodman's, Alice Hein's and Jan Iverson's generosity plus Holiday Matchett's hard work, the Guemes Island Community Center's Foundation Renovation fund is $1,256 richer.

At the "Classy Dress Sale and Tea" items were sold through "Let your conscience be your guide" donations.

Guemes ladies had more than 100 garments, shoes, and miscellaneous items to peruse.

Perhaps the most fun was the impromptu fashion shows as blouses, dresses, jackets, skirts, shoes and hats were tried on. Not all of the models looked as lovely as Laura Bassett, perfect in everything she tried on, but all purchasers, prospective customers and on-lookers had a good time at the event.

Since Guemes doesn't offer many "formal" occasions, a number of the most glamorous pieces were donated to the Anacortes Community Theater. Other items not purchased went to the Soroptimist Thrift Shop that sponsors the "Dress for Success" program.
