What's New at the Library?

Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

The author, born in Somalia to a traditional Muslim family, lived Saudi Arabia, Kenya and Somalia before entering the Netherlands to escape from a forced marriage. Here she studied political science, adopted a Western lifestyle, and became an activist for Muslim women's rights. In 2003, she was elected to the Dutch Parliament. The following year, she made a TV film, entitled Submission, with the Dutch director Theo van Gogh who was assassinated for his role in the production. Her story and controversial political stance make this book an absorbing read.

Musicophilia, by Oliver Sacks.

This book explores the effects of music not only on our emotions but also on the brain itself. The author, who also wrote The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat and Awakenings, is a Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry whose studies of people with unusual neurological conditions are unforgettable.

Also:

The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield

Ghost Sea, by Ferenc Mate

Bold Spirit, by Linda L. Hunt

Fiction for the Thoughtful Reader

Literature from the "Axis of Evil": Writings from Iran, Iraq, North Korea and Other Enemy Nations by Alene Mason, Dedi Felman, and Samantha Schnee may open largely unknown lands for you. As the introduction says, "Not knowing what the rest of the world is thinking and writing is both dangerous and boring." Expand your consciousness by reading these works of fiction and poetry.

Ray Bradbury's Now and Forever (Somewhere a Band is Playing & Leviathan 99) presents two never before published novellas that are highly contrasting stories. A must read for Bradbury fans.

Check these out at the Guemes Island Library, open 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays and 2-4 PM on Saturdays.
