Holiday Hideaway Water Company

The Holiday Hideaway Association has owned and operated our community water system since the spring of 2004. The manager/operator is Mark Spahr and the bookkeeper is Darcy Daniells; both live on Guemes. Mark has enlisted the help of several volunteers from the homeowners to help with various projects and to provide back-up when Mark is off the island.

Meters are read once a month on the 31st of the month. In order to promote water conservation the water rates increase as water use increases. Check your bill, a recent newsletter, or the Menu and Documents of this web site to see the specific rates.

Limited Availability of H2 Water Shares

Recently H2 Water sold the last of the water shares that were offered for resale starting in 2004 when the Association assumed ownership. A letter was sent to property owners who still own unused water shares asking if they would like to offer their shares for sale. Several have been offered. In the future The Association will have a very limited number of water shares and they may all be sold out without further notice.

If you have any questions or want to find out the current status you can call Darcy Daniels at 299-4535. Next Board Meeting-Sunday, February 18 at 11:00AM

Property owners who want to discuss an issue with the board are welcome. Please call our President, Sharon Schlittenhard so that she can add adjust the agenda.

Water Quality Is Our Most Important Goal

The water quality test results for 2006 have been satisfactory in all respects. Since taking over management of the water system, Mark Spahr and his volunteer team have flushed lines and water tanks, improved circulation of the water in the storage tanks, and generally worked to ensure a good community water system. Mark has over 30 years of experience with water system management, operations, and engineering. In a recent letter the Skagit County Health Department commented that the system is being managed in a thorough and conscientious manner.

During the 3 years of existence the water rates have generated sufficient revenue to satisfy several needs; 1) H2Water's routine monthly operating expenses (such as electricity for pumping, postage, salaries, water quality testing, insurance, etc), 2) annual "debt service" on our state loan, and 3) occasional "issues and problems" that arise (such as replacing a failed well pump, rebuilding a collapsing pumphouse, repairing leaks in the system, sealing leaking reservoirs, replacing a faulty well seal, and repairs to the automatic control system to name a few).

Now as we finish our third year of managing the system, we are undertaking several capital improvements. We are hiring a contractor to start a systematic program to replace our oldest and most failure-prone plumbing fittings. Most of our several hundred water service connections include 35+ year old "galvanized" fittings which are near the end of their useful lives. Rather than waiting for these fittings to leak and fail one by one, we are planning to begin an organized approach to replace a number of these fittings every year ("scheduled, preventive maintenance" instead of "unscheduled, reactive repair"). Replacing all of these fittings will require at least three years of effort, but we feel this is necessary to preserve the investment that we have in our water system and the value that it provides to each or our properties.

In addition we plan to upgrade the upper booster pump station and add the capability of running our pumps during extended power outages.

In summary, the Board of Directors and staff of H2 Water are dedicated to protecting and enhancing water quality.

Beaches, Boat Ramps, and Buoys

As property owners and members of the Hideaway Homeowners Association we are lucky to have access to three common property beaches: Cooks Cove, Long Bay, and Deadman's Cove.

Over the years there have been an increasing number of boats left unused and unidentifiable. During last year's big winter storm with the extremely high tide, there were many boats damaged and swept into the pond. Winter damage is common, but, this year it was even more severe. At April's HHA Annual meeting the membership decided that all boats left on our beaches must be identified with both the owners name and phone number. The two storage sheds must be removed. Aug 12, 2006 is the cut-off date to have this done. Any unidentified boats left after that date will be removed.

As a reminder: These three beaches are owned and maintained by the HHA for the use and enjoyment of its members and accompanied guests. The buoys are individually owned and maintained and are not in any way associated with the HHA. We welcome volunteer clean-up. It is our property, please help your neighbors keep it clean.
