Moving Toward Meaning Workshops

Recently, I decided to answer a call that first came to me when I moved to Guemes Island but that has been put on hold for the last three years. This call is to use art as a means of reflection and personal exploration and to invite others to join me in this quest. The answer to this call has been born as Moving Toward Meaning, a collection of new workshops inviting self-exploration through art and writing.

Offered in an idyllic Island setting each workshop provides a safe and comfortable space to give voice to personal reflection through the powerful combination of images and words. Incorporating gentle structure, guided writing exercises and instruction on complimentary art techniques, each workshop is designed to create a project flowing from insight and instilled with personal meaning.

Anyone can discover new avenues of expression through a Moving Toward Meaning workshop. Artists wanting to add meaning to their work through writing and writers wishing to add meaning through imagery will each find inspiration in these workshops. But if you have no experience with a pen or paintbrush these workshops will move you toward a magical new place of creative and meaningful self-expression.

Moving Toward Meaning Workshops

Soul Collage Cards:

Inspired by the work of Sheena B. Frost this workshop unlocks the power of symbolic imagery to explore and memorialize different aspects of our inner selves. Through guided writing we will begin to discover and name these aspects and to understand their influence in our lives. Then through a fun and liberating collage technique we will make Soul Collage Cards representing some of these inner aspects. This deck can be added to outside of the workshop and used for continued personal exploration. I highly recommend reading Sheena Frost’s book ‘Soul Collage’ either before or after this workshop.

Ancestors:

Discover yourself by exploring and honoring your ancestors and family members. If like me, you were switched at birth or maybe raised by wolves invent the ancestors you should have had. Through guided writing we will get to know these people on a more intimate level perhaps discovering some of their unspoken intentions or dreams. Using the images and symbols from your writing as fodder we will create individual tributes to each person by combining photos and ephemera you have brought with you with items I will provide. These montages will capture the spirit of your ancestors and lead to a greater understanding of your connections to them.

9:30 am to 4:30 pm 10/11/03

Unbound Visual Journals:

This was the first workshop I envisioned when I decided to create Moving Toward Meaning and it is what inspired the whole collection. In this workshop we will alternate guided writing exercises and cool art techniques to create an unbound journal. I love the unbound format because it eliminates the fear of making an entry into that beautiful journal you have been saving and allows us to use different types of papers to meet our need for both art and words. There are many ways to hold your unbound journal together and I will have a couple for you to choose from. Use the day to play with your writing and become comfortable with combining words and images or focus on one area of your life to explore and use each exercise as a tool for reflection.

9:30 am to 4:30 pm 11/1/03

Lifelines:

What life paths have led us to where we are today? Which paths will take us toward the futures we dream about? Reflect back on the patterns and themes of your life and explore this history through guided writing. Or you may choose to look forward and use these exercises to draw a road map to your future. We will combine our words with images from our lives to create a beautiful Concertina bound book celebrating and mapping your personal lifeline.

9:30 am to 4:30 pm 1/10/04

Personal Photo Journal:

Explore and reflect on your life by closely examining your personal photos. Each picture of you is a time capsule of memories, emotions, dreams and desires. Revisit yourself through guided writing and learn what that little girl, teenager or new mother has to tell you today. Use these words and images to create your own photo journal by altering some of the photos and using transfer techniques to create evocative and dreamlike images. This photo journal will give voice to yourself over the passage of time and create a record of your personal evidence.
