7th Annual Dog Island Run!

The dawn of the 7th annual Dog Island Run brought clouds and rain and much cooler temperatures than the previous year. The participants were fewer as well. Enthusiasm was high however, and the rain did not dampen the spirits of any. Volunteers were up and out early in the morning, setting up tables, brewing coffee, installing a PA system, timing devices, setting up water stations on the course, and so many other big and little things that needed to be done. Dean, Nik and Ruth Taylor from Skagit Runners graciously donated time, equipment, moral support and assurances that all would go well.

Saturday morning showed only 69 pre-registered participants. By day’s end there were 147 from 32 cities, 6 states and 2 foreign countries.

Kathy Hoy {#26} (left with Tim Wittman) came the furthest, TeAtatu Peninsula, New Zealand. She was planning a birthday celebration in the USA and decided she wanted to run a 10K while here. Her friend CA Cosgrove {#70} {also celebrating a birthday} provided the Washington State connection.

Dan and Michelle Blumhagen{#72 #74} (left) Tel Aviv, Israel knew their vacation dates to Washington State,USA would coincide with the Dog Island Run and were eager to come to Guemes and participate.

Damon Vaughn {#105} (right) Boston, Mass. decided to run the 10K while being recruited to help Willie McWatters work on his property on Homestead Lane. Damon ran the 2004 Boston Marathon less than 2 months ago, as did Tim Wittman .

Sherry Tamone {#109} Juneau, Alaska and David Svilar{#131} (left) Telluride, Colorado traveled a considerable distance and included the Guemes Island DIR in their travel plans.

Angel Araiza {seven years old} (right) Mt. Vernon rolled the course in his wheel chair. First time for wheel chair participant.

Jay Gorman {#68} had a set of twins (right) cheering for “uncle” Jay. The Tuttles, Seaway Hollow was his Guemes Island Connection.
