Minutes: GIPOA Board Meeting, June 13, 2009

Howard Pellett called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.

In attendance:  Howard Pellett, Carol Pellett, Bob Groeschell, Juby Fouts, Anne Jackets, Roz Glasser, Shelby Platt, Rob Schroder, Gil Anderson, Harry Finks

The minutes of the April 11, 2009, meeting were approved as corrected.

Treasurer, Carol Pellett, reported as of May 31, 2009, a balance in the checking account of $217.28 and a balance in the Betty Crookes Guemes Gold savings account of $2,781.29. The report was accepted by the board.

Old Business:

  • North Sound Alliance:  Howard reported that he is now the treasurer.
  • Fireworks:  Juby will include fireworks cards from last year in some CERT packets being distributed soon.  Rob will put up the six fireworks signs, and Bob will help him.  Everyone needs to note the improvements caused by our efforts last year, and keep this matter before all islanders again this year.
  • South Shore Road Progress:  Roz reported progress and cooperation in discussions concerning long term plans for the west side.  A meeting is set for June 27 to discuss long term plans for the east side.  A general community meeting to talk about short term thoughts is on July 18, at 1:30 p.m.  Roz was positive and felt that there is some progress.
  • Guemes Island Poker Run:  There is still no news and no knowledge about this.  Roz will check with the county again.
  • GIPOA/GICCA Plant Sale:  Anne reported that this was a good event, wonderful plants and good community cooperation.  $495 was given to the Community Center and $495 to GIPOA for the Scholarship Fund.
  • Sustainable Guemes Initiative:  Howard told of the group of islanders that have been meeting on Thursday nights.  A possible community garden may be developed near the park.  Larry Pike is taking a lead role on this.  Many others are involved.  There appears to be considerable interest.
  • Betty Crookes Guemes Gold Scholarship:  Harry reported that the committee responsible for this process will continue to work in the future.  Thinking positively with the committee about our island youth was a very good experience.  Winners this year were: Ivy Gwost (gold), Adair Cardon (silver) and Nora Woofenden (bronze).  Presentation ceremony was a very positive event.  Harry will write to other island organizations to see if they wish to contribute to this program because it indeed is an island program and not one belonging to GIPOA.  Bob will help look for other scholarship programs that might be good for our youth.

New Business

·        Index Cable Developments:  Howard reported that cooperation between Index Cable and the actively involved island support committee had broken down.

·        Raising Dues:  The board voted to raise GIPOA membership dues in 2010 to $15 per couple and $10 per individual.

·        The Entering Guemes Sign:  The board again discussed the idea of placing a sign with important messages on the island.  Bob showed the group a picture of the sign that welcomes people to Marrowstone Island.  No action was taken on this subject.

Meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
