The Scholarship Committee meeting is May 16 and Carol plans to attend. Juby has also indicated at our last meeting that she would also go but we’re unable to confirm that today in her absence.
Bob and Gil are getting available online scholarship information together for their use. Financial aid is not as available as college tuitions rise and many academic cuts are being made.
Leota Price reports posting on Line Time the bi-monthly meeting and the Minutes. She reports that the meeting times went on the calendar without a problem but is having difficulty with the site as she attempted to add the past few meeting minutes. Her plan is to continue to work on that and to seek help from Line Time if necessary. The Annual GIPOA meeting needs to be added to the calendar.
Rob Schroeder reports he’s been successful in working with the county and they’ve agreed to add speed bumps to Guemes Island Road. New speed signs have recently been installed and have flags to draw driver’s attention. The speed on the Island continues to be problematic.
Regarding the upcoming Plant Sale, Howard Pellett has spoken with Anne Jackets and the banner is available from last year. The Church has readily agreed to our sale being at the same time as their Bake sale. The GIPOA Plant sale will be May 28th. From 9:00 am to 3 :00 pm. Discussion re pricing of the plants, Howard will consult with Anne Jackets, Sally Stapp will talk with Becky Stinson to see if she would help with that. Bob will contact the Guemes Tide to see if they will post in the next edition. Leota Price will post on Line Time. Carol Pellett will be the cashier.
The annual meeting is June 11. A discussion ensued regarding having a speaker and of possible subjects. A decision was made to ask Evelyn Adams, the leader of Beat the Heat to speak re emergency preparedness. Information for attendees will be available. The Family Emergency Preparedness Plan booklet was thought to be a good one. Leota will contact Skagit County Emergency Management for available material.
Also at the annual meeting will be elections for President, On Island Trustee, Treasurer and Off Island Trustee. As Roz has been off the Island for the past 11 months and not available to assume to roll of Vice President, one of the committee will contact her to see if we need to add Vice President to the vote.
Sally Stapp will run for On Island Trustee, Howard Pellett will run for President; Carol will run for Treasurer, Shelby for Off Island Trustee. Bob also will run for Off Island Trustee. All members will talk with friends and neighbors to try to get others involved and willing to run for open positions.
At the annual meeting nominations for the Citizen of the Year will be taken. A card is sent to all current GIPOA members prior to the meeting with information regarding board members openings and for the Citizen of the Year nominations.
Howard Pellett reports Historical records now has a cabinet and will be transferring to the Community Center soon.
Bob reports recent home break-in with another one reported also to have occurred. All occurrences should be reported to the sheriff even if nothing has been taken.
Howard Pellett has movie “March Point”, a story of 3 boys awakening to the destruction two oil refineries have brought to their communities. The movie is 57 minutes long. He proposes having a Guemes Island movie night at the Community Center. He has also received authorization to show the movie. May 21st is the attentively planned date.
