Remembering Sherman Stanard

Sherman Stanard, 69, a man of few words but of a lightning wit, took his last breath on Guemes Island, Washington, on October 4, 2019.

Sherman supported his family with the grocery business culminating in owning Moab Best Value Foods with his partner, Bill Hofhine. He was respected as such a strong and fair boss that when he was transferred most of his employees asked to go with him.

He later realized his desire to work outside and serve the community by retiring his business and working for the City of Moab, first in the Parks Department and later in Water Treatment.

Sherman also served as leader of the Moab Elks Lodge. He was a respected member of the community and proud family man. He was fearless in figuring out how to fix things and solve problems. He made furniture, remodeled his own houses, and discovered a love and talent as a builder.

You could count on him to be there in times of trouble. He was our rock. He was born in Hawaii but grew up in Boise, Idaho, where he graduated from Capital High School. He served in the U.S. Army before receiving a BA in accounting from Boise State University.

After retiring, he moved from Moab to be close to his children and grandchildren. His parents, Carl and Gladys, preceded him in death.

Surviving him is his wife of 41 years, Kimberley Stanard; children, Elisha (John Person) and James (Christy Chan) Stanard; grandchildren, Mona and Maximilian Stanard; sister, Linda (Will Summers); brothers, Carl and Scott Stanard; niece, Sarah (Kyle Mann); nephews, Steve (Christina) and Mike (Amy) Stanard and Jay and Dan Summers.

He was able to find peace after struggling with cancer. We will celebrate his life at Guemes Island Community Center at 2 pm Oct. 26.
