Commissioner Anderson's Rant

On Monday, May 16, 2005, at the end of the comment period between 11:45 and 12:00, Steve Orsini [of the Guemes Island Ferry Committee] was cut short so that Commissioner Anderson could enter the following (transcribed verbatim from a CD purchased through the Commissioners office):

"I have a comment. I am sick and tired of this! The people of Guemes Island seem to think that ferry belongs to them! That ferry belongs to everyone in Skagit County to provide transportation service and this advisory committee started out to give advice to the Commissioners. You guys now think you are the policy board. You act like you are a policy making board that determines what happens there. Frankly, we spend more money per capita on that than any thing else and frankly, I think this committee has outlived its usefulness. I really do! I think we should have a transportation committee and you have one member on it. Then maybe somebody out there in the County that don't like a car driving by their place can say, "I want you to limit hours on that road." You know, the last time I looked, the roads on Guemes Island belonged to the County and all the County taxpayers. They are part of it. So this idea of exclusionary tactics, "let's keep people off the Island", I've had it up to here with that!"
